Pinehurst has gone by three names. It started as Prairie Home, with a post office in 1860. It became Hunter’s Retreat in 1871, then took the name Pinehurst in 1904 after the railroad was built.
Pinehurst is a census-designated place, not an incorporated city. That means there’s no city government and no city property tax. Montgomery County and special districts, like MUDs, provide services.
Today it’s a mix of established neighborhoods, newer subdivisions and wooded lots, with Highway 249 as the main road through the area.

What to check before you make an offer.
Two homes a mile apart can have very different monthly costs. These are the things we look at for every Pinehurst-area home.
Property taxes
Your tax bill is set by every taxing unit the home sits in: county, school district, and any special districts. The home’s record on the Montgomery Central Appraisal District site lists them.
MUD taxes
Some neighborhoods, especially newer ones, are in a Municipal Utility District (MUD), which adds its own tax. We check it for every home you’re serious about.
Flood zones
Look up any address on the FEMA Flood Map Service Center, read the seller’s disclosure, and get a flood insurance quote before your option period ends.
School district
Pinehurst is split between Magnolia ISD and Tomball ISD. The exact address decides which one, so always confirm with the district before you buy or lease.
HOAs & deed restrictions
Many subdivisions have HOA dues, rules and deed restrictions. Read them before you buy, especially if you plan to add a shed, a pool or a fence, or to park an RV or boat.

If it will be your primary home, file for your homestead exemption. Our Montgomery County homestead guide walks you through it.
